Day 1
Washington D.C. - Greensboro - Charlotte, NC (1 Night) Tread in the footsteps of great men and women who have shaped America as we know it today as we visit the museums, memorials and sites of the Civil Rights Trail. This morning we depart from Washington D.C. and travel south to Greensboro, North Carolina. Greensboro is the site of the nonviolent protests where 4 black college students were denied service at the segregated store counter which sparked sit-ins that led to a movement that would change our nation. After lunch, we'll visit the International Civil Rights Center and Museum for a guided tour. Continue on to Charlotte for your overnight stay. Hotel: Hilton Charlotte Center City or similar Included Meals: Lunch, Dinner Day 2 Charlotte, NC - Atlanta, GA (1 Night) After breakfast at your hotel travel to Atlanta, known as the cradle of the Civil Rights Movement. Explore the extensive visitor center and learning about Dr. King’s life work to bring civil justice to people of color. Walk in his footsteps, and hear his voice in the church where he moved hearts and minds. Marvel at how he was an instrument for social change. Visit the Martin Luther King Center, established in 1968 by Mrs. Coretta Scott King, The Martin Luther King, Jr. Center for Nonviolent Social Change (“The King Center”) has been a global destination, resource center and community institution for over a quarter century. Nearly a million people each year make pilgrimage to the National Historic Site to learn, be inspired and pay their respects to Dr. King’s legacy. Hotel: Atlanta Marriott Marquis or similar Included Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner Day 3 Atlanta, GA - Montgomery, AL (1 Night) Travel to Montgomery where we'll visit the Dexter Avenue King Memorial Baptist Church which was founded in 1877 in a slave trader’s pen, located on Dexter Avenue (formerly Market Street) in Montgomery, Alabama. Continue to the Montgomery Civil Rights Memorial/Lynching Memorial. Hotel: Renaissance Montgomery or similar Included Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner Day 4 Montgomery, AL - Birmingham, AL -Memphis, TN (1 Night) Visit the Rosa Parks Library and Museum which was built to uphold and interpret for the public benefit, education and enjoyment, materials related to the events and accomplishments of individuals associated with Montgomery Bus Boycott. A short drive this morning finds us in Birmingham. On arrival, join on an orientation tour with a Local Specialist as we see the 16th Street Church, where four girls lost their lives during a retaliation bombing during the upheavals of the Civil Rights Movement. Visit the Birmingham Civil Rights Museum which depicts the struggles of the Civil Rights Movement in the 1950's and 1960's. Depart for Memphis, Tennessee. Hotel: The Central Station Memphis or similar Included Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner Day 5 Memphis - Knoxville, TN (1 Night) After breakfast at the hotel, join a Local Specialist for a special introduction to Beale Street Historic District. A hub for African-American culture and commerce nearly from its beginning, Beale Street was the scene for protests by Memphis sanitation workers over deplorable job conditions. Afterwards, we'll visit the National Civil Rights Museum which celebrates the icons and activists of social equality. Housed at the famous Lorraine Motel, this is where many African- American icons stayed including Jackie Robinson and Martin Luther King Jr, and also the tragic site of the Martin Luther King Jr assassination. Continue on to Knoxville later this afternoon where you'll have an evening at leisure. Hotel: Embassy Suites by Hilton Knoxville Downtown or similar Included Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner Day 6 Knoxville, TN - Richmond, VA (1 Night) Enjoy a leisurely morning before we continue our travel to Richmond, Virginia, stopping en-route to enjoy lunch at a local restaurant. Hotel: Delta by Marriot Richmond Downtown or similar Included Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner Day 7 Richmond, VA - Washington D.C. (1 Night) This morning visit the Black History Museum & Cultural Center of Virginia showcasing the inspiring stories of African American history in Virginia. Travel to Washington D.C. where you'll then congregate for a 3-hour leadership workshop at your hotel. This evening join together for a special black tie dinner and celebrate the journey taken on the Civil Rights Trail.
